Barlborough psychiatric unit may still go ahead...

Campaigners who fought to stop the building of a 60 bed psychiatric unit at Barlborough Links are planning to do battle for a second time after news that Waystone Ltd have lodged an appeal with the Government's Planning Inspectorate. They hope that their plans for Cygnet Health Care's psychiatric unit will be considered at a public inquiry. The plans were originally refused by Bolsover District Council's Planning Committee who are now waiting to see if the Planning Inspectorate grant the appeal. If so, all parties will be able to put their arguments for or against the unit at the inquiry before an independent inspector.

Campaigners are concerned about unsupervised patients in the community and that the proposed low to medium-risk unit may be upgraded to high-risk. Waystone Ltd say the unit will provide up to 160 jobs and there are no plans for housing high-risk psychiatric patients.
