Description
Barrow Hill Roundhouse Railway Centre.
The Barrow Hill Roundhouse and Engine Shed was built by the Midland Railway Company and was in continuous operation from its opening in 1870 until its closure in 1991. In 1989 Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society (BHESS) was formed with the intention of saving the soon to be closed roundhouse from demolition. Unfortunately, the road to raising funds for the purchase and the preservation of this important part of our railway heritage was a long and arduous one; but thanks to the hard work of a dedicated team of volunteer enthusiasts, and with help from local councils and private companies, the dream became a reality and has resulted in the saving of this historic railway centre of which we should all be proud.

The BHESS is responsible for the Barrow Hill Roundhouse and Railway Centre which first opened to the public in July 1998. The roundhouse is a building where engines could be coaled, watered, repaired and maintained and turned, if necessary, on a turntable. The roundhouse is important because it is the only surviving example in Britain out of the 2,000 that were built. Facilities on the 14 acre Barrow Hill site include: a connection to the main national railway network which allows veteran engines and stock from other organisations to visit the site for events; there is a wide range of rolling stock, an undercover storage, repair and maintenance facility, workshops, and over one mile of track. Also, NewRail, the railway research organisation, has a facility at Barrow Hill where research and testing are
carried out.
