Description
Creswell Crags.
Creswell Crags is a limestone gorge on each side of which are a number of caves. Through the gorge runs a stream which widens into a small lake and is the habitat of a variety of wildlife. During the last Ice-Age, between 10,000 and 50,000 years ago, hunters following the herds of mammoths, reindeer, horse and bison used the crags as a seasonal camp and sheltered in the caves. Evidence of their presence has been found in the form of fossil animal bones and tools made of stone, flint and bone. A number of bones found have representations of animals carved upon them.

The Crags is one of the most important archaeological sites in Britain particularly since cave-art created by our ancient ancestors was discovered in some of the caves in 2003. The carvings which were engraved into the rocks some 12,000 years ago include representations of bison, horse and birds and are the only examples of Palaeolithic cave art in the Britain.

The Creswell Heritage Trust responsible for the area has in recent times been awarded a grant of £4.26 million which has enabled a road running through the gorge to be re-routed and the museum and education centre to be extended.
