In Derbyshire, children begin full-time schooling at the beginning of the term in which their fifth birthday actually falls.

Within the primary phase, there are 3 types of school:

  • Infant schools generally cater for pupils aged between 5 and 7 years, but if an Infant school has a nursery unit the age range is 3 to 7 years.
  • Junior schools cater for pupils aged between 7 and 11.
  • Primary schools generally cater for pupils aged between 5 and 11 but if the school has a nursery unit the age range is 3 to 11 years.
Secondary schools cater for children aged between 11 and 16 years, but if the school has a sixth-form the age range is 11 to 18 years.

Early Years

Children aged three and four years follow what is known officially as the Foundation Stage.  This is the first stage of the national curriculum and is called this because it gives children secure foundations for later learning, building on children’s existing skills and interests and using play activities to help them learn.

Your child is entitled to 55, 2.5 hour sessions per term (maximum of five sessions per week) funded by Derbyshire County Council, starting in the term following his/her third birthday.  You can find out more from the Children's Information Service by ringing tel: 01629 585585, or email info.cis@derbyshire.gov.uk

Your child can attend any approved:

  • private day nursery
  • pre-school playgroup
  • independent school
  • nursery school or nursery class in an infant or primary school including special schools
  • childminder who is part of an accredited network
What must I do to claim the Free Early Years Funding?

Approach the provider of your choice to request a place but check that they are registered to accept nursery education funding. When you have secured a place, the local authority will then fund the provider direct. If you want more than five times 2.5 hour sessions per week you will need to pay the extra cost yourself.

Where can I get more information about the Foundation Stage?

The SureStart unit has published an information pack and leaflet for parents that you can obtain directly from DfES Publications by ringing 0845 602 2260 and quoting the reference IFP/CLLSSS.
