About Us
During the outdoor playing season (May - September) we currently play league matches on Saturdays in the Mansfield & District Bowling Association and social bowling on Monday and Thursday evenings.

We have three Level 2 coaches who are involved in various indoor bowls coaching activities during the winter including Whitwell Primary School and Clowne Heritage Community School after-school clubs as well as coaching of new players and juniors on the green during the playing season.

Due to proposed redevelopment of the old Miners' Welfare site, that includes the current bowling green, there are plans in progress to relocate to a new site being provided by the developer at the rear of Whitwell Social Club. It is hoped that the new green will be laid this year together with a new pavilion in readiness for use in the 2009 season.

The outdoor season has commenced and anyone interested in trying the game of bowls can come along to the green on Hanger Hill on Saturday afternoons at 2.00pm, Monday evening or Thursday evening at 6.30pm. See photo below of the green and its location.

Bowls is a game of skill and strategy but is relatively easy to learn regardless of sporting prowess. It is very sociable and a community based sport open to all where both genders and young and old can compete on equal footing.

Club History

The existing bowling green on Hangar Hill has been in use since 1928, supported by the adjacent Miners' Welfare, which in turn was supported by the local colliery. The green suffered during the war from the horses of the Cheshire Yeomanry being housed on the site, but it was re-laid in 1949.

Following the closure of the colliery in 1986, the economy of the village suffered and consequently the Miner’s Welfare eventually closed in 1991.

During 1992/93 negotiations took place between the Parish Council, the Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation (CISWO) and ourselves to secure the future of the club and green. This resulted in the CISWO. providing a small pavilion with limited facilities and the Parish Council accepting a 21 year lease for the Green.
